The 21st Smögen Summer Symposium on Virology

A sunset and text Smögen meeting

Dear Virologists,

The registration for Smögen is now open. The link to the registration is currently https://www.swedishvirology.se/smogen-meeting-registration/Information will be found also through the Swedish Virology website (www.swedishvirology.se) shortly. Please find a preliminary program attached. This is subject to change depending on the number of participants. Also this year the meeting will be sent online. Please note deadline for abstracts for oral presentation is May 31.

The 21st Smögen Summer Symposium on Virology takes place August 22-24, 2024. The general Symposium format will be the same as previous years, with particitation in Smögen and also online. The scientific program will include Keynote lectures from outstanding national and international experts in various fields of Virology. Another important part of the Symposium is the short oral presentations representing Scandinavian Virology research, ranging from basic to applied Virology to Clinical Virology. Also the social program will aim at keeping to previous traditions.

We have so far succeeded in engaging three excellent keynote lecturers:

Dr. Mart Krupovic, Institut Pasteur, Paris, France
Dr. Karl Ståhl, SVA, Uppsala, Sweden and
Dr. Mattias Forsell, Umeå Universitet, Umeå, Sweden

Dr. Mart Krupovic’s research focuses on the interface of microbiology, virology and evolution. He has explored the extent of archaeal virus diversity in different habitats – from the human gut to hypersaline lakes and acidic hot springs – and studied different aspects of their biology, including virion structure and assembly, molecular mechanisms of virus entry and egress as well as other aspects of virus-host interaction.

Dr. Karl Ståhl, works with infectious disease epidemiology and disease control with focus on exotic animal diseases. His research has focused on African swine fever as well as other viral infections.

Dr. Mattias Forsell utilizes a translational approach to study humoral immunity to vaccination or after infection. The overall research focus is to understand how protective immune responses are regulated in a molecular, cellular and population level.

Those who have not received the present message, please reply to kristina [dot] nystrom [at] gu [dot] se (kristina[dot]nystrom[at]gu[dot]se) with text "Add to Smögen mailing list”. The Symposium is organized by the Virus- och Pandemifonden -  Swedish Society for Virology. For a list of the Board members please consult the homepage: http://www.swedishvirology.se.

The Registration Fee is "All inclusive" as per previous years. The Organizers wish to acknowledge the fruitful cooperation with our local partners, including Smögens Hafvsbad, Bröderna Samuelsson Fiskexport AB (Samuelsson Bros. Seafood Plaza), and D Folkesson Consulting AB.
